Attack on Sarpanch Namdeo Nikam: A Disturbing Incident in Maharashtra
In a shocking incident that unfolded on Thursday night, Sarpanch Namdeo Nikam was attacked in the Dharashiv district of Maharashtra. This brazen assault left both him and a passenger injured, marking a troubling escalation in violence against local officials.
Details of the Attack
The attack occurred around 10 PM when Nikam was driving his SUV towards his village. Four assailants on motorcycles targeted the vehicle, initially throwing eggs at the windshield. They then escalated their aggression by smashing the glass with a cement block. In a particularly alarming act, the attackers hurled a petrol-filled condom into the car, splashing flammable fuel inside.
Legal Action and Investigation
Following the incident, Nikam filed a complaint, prompting the Tuljapur police to register a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) section 110, which pertains to the attempt to commit culpable homicide. Nikam, who resides in Pune and visits Mesai Jawalga village a few times a week, indicated he has no known enemies in the area. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working diligently to identify the perpetrators.
Context of Rising Violence
This incident comes on the heels of public outrage regarding the recent abduction and murder of another sarpanch, Santosh Deshmukh, in Beed district. Allegations have surfaced implicating Walmik Karad, a close aide of state minister Dhananjay Munde, as the mastermind behind Deshmukh’s murder, further intensifying fears for the safety of local leaders.
As the Crime Investigation Department (CID) delves into the circumstances surrounding Deshmukh’s murder, two related cases involving extortion and assault have also been transferred to them for investigation.
