UPI Fraud Alert: Stay Vigilant Against the Jumped Deposit Scam
In today’s digital age, technology has made communication and online transactions incredibly convenient. With numerous UPI applications available, users can effortlessly transfer money in seconds. However, this convenience has also attracted scammers who are always on the lookout for new ways to defraud unsuspecting individuals. Recently, authorities have raised alarms about the rising Jumped Deposit Scam, specifically targeting UPI users.
What is the Jumped Deposit Scam?
For those who may not be familiar, this scam involves fraudsters depositing a small amount of money into a victim’s UPI account to earn their trust. Once trust is established, they concoct a fake story to trick the victim into transferring a larger sum of money. Given the increasing prevalence of such scams, the Tamil Nadu Police have issued a warning urging users to remain vigilant.
How the Scam Unfolds:
The scam typically begins when the fraudster sends a minuscule amount of money to the victim’s bank account via UPI. Shortly after, the scammer calls the victim, claiming they need to return a greater amount due to a fabricated story. The victim, caught off guard, checks their account and often taps on the payment request link provided by the fraudster, inadvertently entering their PIN number. The scam culminates when the victim realizes the actual amount transferred and the scammer absconds with the difference.
Stay Alert: Tips to Defend Against Scammers
If you receive any suspicious calls, keep the following tips in mind:
- Never share your UPI PIN with anyone.
- Do not respond to unsolicited payment requests.
- Verify the identity of anyone asking for money.
- Report any suspicious activity to the cybercrime portal or local authorities immediately.
