Man Loses Rs 6.6 Lakh to WhatsApp Scam Posing as Canara Bank

Beware of Scams: How One Mangaluru Resident Lost Rs 6.6 Lakh to a WhatsApp Fraud

In today’s digital age, online banking has become a norm, offering convenience at our fingertips. However, this ease of access also attracts cybercriminals eager to exploit unsuspecting individuals. A recent incident from Mangaluru serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with online transactions. A man fell victim to a scam, losing a staggering Rs 6.6 lakh after receiving a deceptive message on WhatsApp, allegedly from Canara Bank.

How It All Started

The victim received a message from a WhatsApp group cleverly named Canara Bank, which had altered its identity to seem legitimate. The message warned him that his account would be frozen unless he updated his KYC details via an APK link included in the message. Alarmed by the threat, he clicked the link, leading him to a counterfeit bank website that closely mimicked the official Canara Bank interface.

How the Scam Unfolded

Upon visiting the fake page, he was prompted to enter sensitive information, including his UIDAI number, mobile number, ATM PIN, and CVV. Although he received OTPs on his phone, he wisely refrained from sharing them. Unfortunately, his account was still drained through multiple unauthorized transactions using his debit card. Realizing something was amiss, he promptly blocked his card and reported the incident to the Kavoor Police Station.

The Dangers of APK Malware

This incident underscores the rising threat of APK malware. Cybercriminals cleverly employ deceptive messages and links to lure users into downloading harmful files. These files can pilfer sensitive information and even intercept SMS messages, including OTPs, ultimately jeopardizing financial security.
