The Rise of Online Loan Scams: A Cautionary Tale
Cybercriminals are leaving no stone unturned to con innocents out of their hard-earned money. A recent online scam has highlighted the dangers lurking in the digital world, where a man was duped of a substantial amount while trying to secure a bank loan. The Loan Application Process
Sarabjit needed a Rs 2 lakh loan and decided to apply through the Flipkart app. Initially, everything seemed to be going smoothly. On December 4, he received a call from someone claiming to be a Flipkart representative, who informed him that his loan had been approved.
The KYC Trap
However, the representative added that the loan could not be disbursed until Sarabjit completed his KYC (Know Your Customer) verification. To facilitate this, the caller sent Sarabjit a link to complete an online KYC form and instructed him to make a token payment of ₹5 to finalize the process.
The Shocking Outcome
Believing the call was legitimate, Sarabjit filled out the form. Instead of the promised ₹5, a staggering Rs 86,998 was deducted from his bank account. When he attempted to contact the caller again, they disconnected and switched off their phone, leaving him in shock.
Taking Action Against Scams
Realizing he had fallen victim to a scam, Sarabjit promptly reported the incident to the Jagraon police station. The case has been forwarded to the cybercrime department, and an FIR has been lodged under relevant sections of the IPC and IT Act for cheating and fraud. Authorities are now working diligently to trace the stolen money.
