Revolutionizing Mobility: The WalkON Suit F1 Exoskeleton
Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have made a groundbreaking advancement in assistive technology with the introduction of the WalkON Suit F1. This lightweight wearable robot empowers paraplegics to walk, navigate obstacles, and even tackle stairs, significantly enhancing their mobility and daily life.
The Features of the WalkON Suit F1
Weighing in at a mere 50 kg, the WalkON Suit F1 is constructed from robust aluminum and titanium, designed to withstand the rigors of daily use. The suit is powered by 12 electronic motors that replicate human joint movement, enabling users to walk at a speed of 3.2 km/h. Notably, the exoskeleton also allows users to navigate staircases, take lateral steps, and sit down comfortably. One of its standout features is its ability to approach a person in a wheelchair, lock onto them, and assist them in standing up.
Real-Life Impact: A User’s Perspective
Kim Seung-hwan, a paraplegic member of the KAIST team, shared his experience, stating, “It can approach me wherever I am, even when I’m sitting in a wheelchair, and help me stand up.” This innovative approach not only enhances mobility but also fosters independence for users.
Advanced Technology for Enhanced Mobility
The WalkON Suit F1 is equipped with cutting-edge sensors strategically placed on the soles and upper body. These sensors monitor 1,000 signals per second, predicting user movements to maintain balance and ensure smooth operation. Additionally, the inclusion of lenses that function as “eyes” helps users with complete paraplegia detect obstacles and stairs, compensating for their lack of sensory abilities.
A Dream Realized
The creation of the WalkON Suit F1 is a labor of love for the KAIST team. Team member Park Jeong-su revealed that his fascination with exoskeletons was ignited by the film Iron Man. He expressed, “After watching Iron Man, I thought it would be great if I could help people with a robot in real life.”
