A ‘significant upgrade’ over 5G – that’s how Jio’s new 5.5G network is being hailed. But is it really what it claims to be? Technically, yes. Jio 5.5G is expected to surpass standard 5G in terms of speed and reliability. However, 5G was also marketed as a revolutionary leap over 4G. Has it made a tangible difference in our internet experience? Have speeds increased as promised? And how many users actually have access to 5G?
These questions linger as Jio and OnePlus team up to roll out 5.5G service in India. Will this new version enhance user experiences, or is it just another tech gimmick?
What is 5.5G?
Also known as 5G Advanced, Jio’s 5.5G aims to provide faster speeds, lower latency, and improved reliability. During a showcase, Jio demonstrated download speeds exceeding 1,000 Mbps. While this sounds impressive, such speeds are often achieved under ideal test conditions, leaving actual performance lagging behind.
Moreover, the use cases for 5.5G aren’t much different from those of 5G. “The rollout will boost speeds, improve data sharing, and enhance experiences in gaming, video calls, and content consumption,” says Amit Sharma, Senior Analyst at Cyber Media Research (CMR). However, the service will initially only be available on the newly launched OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R, limiting accessibility.
“While 5.5G has an edge in speed and efficiency, the real question is, what will consumers do with it?” notes Faisal Kawoosa, founder and chief analyst at Techarc. “We still haven’t fully utilized 5G, so it’s likely to be the same with 5.5G. We need convincing use cases for which consumers would willingly pay.”
