Hyderabad Man Loses Rs. 1.9 Lakh to PM Kisan Scheme Scam on WhatsApp

Beware of Scams: A Cautionary Tale from Hyderabad

A 53-year-old man from Hyderabad recently fell victim to an elaborate scam that highlights the importance of vigilance in the digital age. Living in Old Safilguda and working for a private company, he received a WhatsApp message from an unidentified number. The message claimed to be from the PM Kisan scheme, a well-known government initiative aimed at providing financial support to farmers. The message included enticing details about the scheme, which led the unsuspecting victim to click on a link that appeared legitimate.

Once he clicked the link, he was redirected to a fraudulent website. Believing it to be authentic, the victim submitted all his personal information to learn more about the benefits of the government program. In a critical misstep, he also shared the one-time password (OTP) he received, resulting in scammers withdrawing a staggering Rs. 1.9 lakh from his account.

Upon discovering the unauthorized transactions, the victim quickly reported the incident to the Rachakonda Cybercrime Police, who are now investigating the case. Authorities have issued a warning to the public to exercise caution when receiving messages that promise financial assistance, especially from unknown sources.

How to Stay Safe Online

To avoid becoming a victim of such scams, it is crucial to verify the authenticity of any message claiming to offer government benefits. Always cross-check information on official websites like PM Kisan and the National Portal of India.

Furthermore, refrain from clicking on suspicious links sent via WhatsApp, email, or social media platforms. Scammers often use these channels to redirect victims to fake websites to steal personal information, including bank details, PINs, and passwords.
