Government Warns of Scam Email Threatening Legal Action Over Internet Usage

Have you received a shocking email claiming there’s a court order against your internet usage? If yes, you’re not alone. The government has flagged this as a scam and is urging everyone to stay alert.

The alert was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by the government’s official PIB Fact Check handle, warning users about a fake email claiming to be from the Indian Intelligence Bureau. The email accuses recipients of using their internet for inappropriate activities and even threatens legal action. But don’t fall for it as it’s a scam.

The email alleges that your internet traffic has been flagged by the Indian Intelligence Bureau and that a court order has been issued against you. It accuses recipients of using their internet to watch pornography and states that the Intelligence Bureau, in partnership with a cybercrime police unit, has advanced forensic tools to track such activities. The email is signed off by a so-called “Prosecutor,” Prashant Gautam.

Here’s what the email claims

The fraudulent email contains alarming language designed to instill fear. It claims that the recipient is under investigation and must take immediate action to avoid legal consequences. This type of scare tactic is a common hallmark of phishing scams, which aim to extract personal information or money from unsuspecting individuals.

Stay informed and protect yourself! The government has also issued warnings about other scams, including fake calls from the RBI regarding bank account blocking and deceptive emails related to e-PAN cards. Always verify the authenticity of any communication before taking action.
