Introducing the Google Pixel 9a!
This week, Google unveiled the highly anticipated Pixel 9a smartphone, showcasing a fresh design and several exciting AI features inherited from its predecessor, the Pixel 9. Powered by the Gemini Nano model, this device promises a reliable performance, albeit with some limitations.
Performance Insights
While the Pixel 9a boasts the Gemini Nano 1.0 XXS (extra extra small), it falls short compared to the Gemini Nano XS found in the Pixel 9 series. This means some features, like the innovative Pixel Screenshots, which organizes and retrieves your screenshots effortlessly, are missing. Google attributes this limitation to the 8GB of RAM in the Pixel 9a—an upgrade to 12GB would be necessary for optimal performance with Gemini Nano.
Missing Features
Additionally, the Call Notes feature, which provides summaries and transcripts of conversations, is absent on the Pixel 9a. The Gemini Nano XXS operates only when needed, unlike the continuous processing seen in the Pixel 9’s XS version. While these features are a letdown, they shouldn’t overshadow the potential of the Pixel 9a.
Satellite SOS: Not on the Pixel 9a
Another noteworthy feature missing from the Pixel 9a is the Satellite SOS for Emergencies, which allows users to make emergency calls via satellite in areas without cellular service. Initially launched in the U.S., this feature has expanded to Alaska, Hawaii, Europe, and Canada. The Pixel 9a still uses the Exynos 5300 modem, which does not support this functionality.
