In today’s digital age, many individuals are constantly seeking easy ways to earn money online. However, not all opportunities are as legitimate as they seem. A recent case involving a 27-year-old businessman from the electrical poles industry serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of online scams. After falling victim to a part-time job scam, he lost a staggering Rs 57.75 lakh.
The incident began on August 16 when the businessman received a message on Telegram from a woman named Ansuya. She promised a simple part-time job that would pay Rs 4,650 for just three hours of online work each day. The enticing offer led him to give it a shot.
Just two days later, another woman named Abhinaya contacted him, claiming to represent a company named ‘Mango Fashion.’ She persuaded him to register on their platform, where he received a Rs 10,000 bonus in his digital wallet. As he completed various tasks, his wallet balance increased, making him believe the opportunity was genuine.
How to Protect Yourself from Such Scams
Encouraged by the growing balance, Abhinaya urged him to invest further in Mango Fashion, promising even higher returns. Over time, he transferred a total of Rs 58.06 lakh to 11 different bank accounts provided by the scammers. His digital wallet displayed a balance of Rs 76 lakh, including supposed profits. However, when he attempted to withdraw the money, he could only retrieve Rs 30,858 through two small transactions.
Realizing he had been scammed after multiple failed withdrawal attempts, he reached out to the cybercrime helpline and filed a complaint. This unfortunate story highlights the importance of being cautious in the digital realm.
