Wim Wenders Remembers Satyajit Ray: A Timeless Encounter
NEW DELHI: It’s been over five decades since renowned filmmaker Wim Wenders first met the legendary Satyajit Ray at the Berlin Film Festival in 1973. At that time, Wenders was a budding director, while Ray was a master in his prime, known for masterpieces like Pather Panchali and Charulata.
A Memorable Meeting
Wenders recalls approaching Ray, who was standing alone in the festival theatre lobby. “I took all my courage and approached him. He was extremely gentle when I introduced myself,” Wenders shared. Their conversation left a lasting impression on him, especially given their similar statures—Ray at 1.93m and Wenders at 1.91m.
Cinematic Inspiration
Ray’s film Ashani Sanket (Distant Thunder), which depicts the human tragedy of the 1943 Bengal famine, won the Golden Bear that year. Wenders mentioned, “Of course, I saw his film, loved it,” highlighting Ray’s significant impact on cinema.
An Ongoing Legacy
In celebration of their shared passion for cinema, Wenders is currently in India, showcasing 18 of his films across five cities, from February 5 to 23. This event, hosted by Shivendra Singh Dungarpur of the Film Heritage Foundation, serves as a tribute to both filmmakers’ contributions to the art of storytelling.
