Will Arvind Kejriwal Shift from the ‘Delhi Model’ to a New Strategy for Punjab?

Will Arvind Kejriwal Pivot from the ‘Delhi Model’ in Punjab?

NEW DELHI: Following the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) recent defeat in the Delhi assembly elections, the spotlight now turns to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Will he continue to embrace Arvind Kejriwal’s “Delhi model” or seek a fresh approach to attract voters?
The meeting between Kejriwal, Mann, and Punjab MLAs raises eyebrows, particularly in light of AAP’s significant losses in Delhi. The party has heavily relied on the Delhi model to not only secure victories but also govern effectively in Punjab. AAP Punjab chief Aman Arora stated, “We have replicated the Delhi Model in Punjab. We discussed how we can take our model to the grassroots.”
Mann echoed this sentiment, noting the implementation of initiatives like Mohalla clinics into Punjab’s healthcare system. “We will make Punjab a model state and present it to the entire country,” he declared.
However, the pressing question remains: Why would Punjab voters endorse a model that has faced rejection in Delhi? AAP’s remarkable victory in Punjab in 2022, winning 92 of 117 seats, was built on promises of free electricity, cash assistance for women, and enhanced healthcare and education facilities. Yet, the past few years have been marred by controversies, including allegations of corruption against top leaders.
As AAP faces growing opposition from Congress and BJP, the road ahead may not be smooth. With the next assembly elections still two years away, Mann has time to reassess strategies. The ultimate challenge for Kejriwal is whether he will innovate a new model for Punjab or double down on a strategy that might be perceived as “failed.”
