Surge in Guillain-Barre Syndrome Cases in Pune: WHO Steps In
PUNE: The city of Pune has seen a concerning rise in cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), now totaling 158 as of Sunday. The Maharashtra health department has reported nine new infections in just one day, prompting a robust response from health authorities.
Improving Patient Conditions
Despite the rising numbers, there is a silver lining. The number of patients requiring ventilator support has decreased from 28 to 21, and those in ICU dropped from 83 to 48. To date, 38 GBS patients have been successfully discharged, with many previously critical patients now showing signs of recovery. However, the outbreak has not been without tragedy, as five casualties have been reported, with the last one occurring on Saturday.
WHO’s Collaborative Efforts
The World Health Organization (WHO) has joined forces with Pune’s district administration to tackle this outbreak. As part of their efforts, teams have been deployed to affected areas to train local health workers in “active case searches,” ensuring that suspected cases are promptly identified, diagnosed, and treated.
Dr. Roderico H Ofrin, WHO representative to India, stated, “WHO is providing technical and on-ground field support to district- and state-level teams to empower responders with adequate resources, training, and support systems.” Additionally, WHO teams are assisting in analyzing epidemiology trends and preparing crucial mapping tools to track GBS cases over time.
