Lok Sabha Furore: TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee Questions Stoppage of MGNREGA Funds for Bengal
NEW DELHI: In a dramatic session of the Lok Sabha, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee escalated tensions with the treasury benches over the suspension of MGNREGA funds allocated for West Bengal. The heated exchange occurred during the Question Hour, where Banerjee highlighted that the benefits of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme had not reached the state, affecting millions of citizens.
Banerjee argued, “The ministry claims 25 lakh cases of fraud have been detected. We urge immediate action—investigate, initiate criminal proceedings, and arrest those responsible. However, you cannot deprive 10 crore people of their entitlements due to these allegations.” His comments directed at Union Minister Giriraj Singh, asking, “Who made you a minister?” drew sharp reactions from the treasury benches, indicating the rising tempers in the House.
Political Tensions Rise
Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal objected to Banerjee’s language, prompting Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to remind members to maintain decorum and address the chair instead of engaging in sidebar disputes. “Choose your words wisely,” Birla stated, emphasizing the need for respectful discourse.
Earlier, while discussing the Union Budget for 2025-26, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman disclosed that 25 lakh fake job cards under MGNREGA had been uncovered, asserting that funds intended for the grassroots had been “looted” by TMC cadres, further intensifying the political clash.
This ongoing debate highlights the contentious relationship between the central government and the West Bengal administration over MGNREGA fund allocations, affecting the livelihoods of millions.
