Historic Whitewashing of Shahi Jama Masjid Begins
Meerut: The much-anticipated whitewashing of the 16th-century Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid commenced on Sunday under the vigilant supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). This initiative follows a directive from the Allahabad High Court and is being conducted in the presence of both the mosque committee and ASI officials.
Background of the Controversy
The mosque has been embroiled in controversy since November 24, 2024, when violence erupted following a local court’s order for a survey. A petition claimed that the mosque was built over an ancient Harihar temple, leading to tragic clashes that resulted in five fatalities and injuries to several, including police personnel.
Details of the Work
Farman Ali, the ASI-appointed painting contractor, stated that a team of nine skilled painters from Delhi and Haryana commenced work early in the morning. “We will first apply a white coat to the exterior walls, followed by a final layer that matches the mosque’s original color. The painting is expected to be completed within a week, just in time for Eid,” he noted.
Collaboration and Colors
Mosque president Zafar Ali confirmed that work is progressing as per the high court’s orders, with additional labor being deployed to expedite the process. “We are using colors that have been utilized for hundreds of years—white, green, and light golden,” he added. The court mandated that ASI and the mosque committee collaborate on this endeavor, ensuring that all work is conducted under ASI supervision.
