Violence Erupts in Manipur as ‘Free Movement’ Begins

NEW DELHI: Fresh violence erupted in Manipur on the first day of “free movement” since the onset of ethnic strife in 2023, which has claimed over 250 lives. A mob attacked a public bus in Kangpokpi, prompting security forces to deploy tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd, resulting in injuries among some demonstrators.

Recovery of Weapons and Arrests

In a bid to restore order, security forces recovered nearly 114 weapons and arrested seven members of banned outfits. This crackdown follows a directive from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who instructed security forces to ensure unrestricted movement across all routes while taking strict action against disruptors.
Around 10 am, buses bound for Churachandpur and Senapati departed from Imphal airport, escorted by a convoy of central forces. The Churachandpur-bound bus reached its destination without incident, while the Senapati-bound bus faced no obstructions until Kanglatongbi in Imphal West district.

Arrests of Militant Group Members

Seven individuals from four banned outfits were arrested in separate operations, including members of the Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) and Kanglei Yaol Kanna Lup (KYKL). Authorities recovered Rs 50,000 from those apprehended in Lamphel, Imphal West district.

Seizure of Illegal Weapons

Security forces seized 114 weapons, IEDs, grenades, and ammunition across various districts following the conclusion of a two-week deadline for voluntary surrender of illegal arms. The administration assured the public that no punitive action would be taken against those who complied, emphasizing the need for peace and communal harmony.
