Remembering Victor Menezes: A Pioneer in Global Banking
MUMBAI: Victor Menezes, the former senior vice chairman of Citibank and the first Indian to ascend to the highest echelons of a multinational bank, passed away in the US at the age of 77. His illustrious career at Citi coincided with its peak in 1998, following the landmark merger with Travelers that birthed Citigroup.
A Visionary Leader
Aditya Puri, the architect behind HDFC Bank, hailed Menezes’ significant influence in shaping the strategic vision of India’s largest private bank. Describing Menezes as “a great human being, a perfect gentleman, and a great boss,” Puri acknowledged his foresight in recognizing the pivotal role technology would play in banking and the necessity for differentiated services.
Achievements and Legacy
Born in Pune in 1947, Menezes graduated from IIT Bombay and earned his master’s in finance and economics from MIT. His career at Citibank soared as he took on roles culminating in his position as co-CEO of its corporate and investment bank. Even after retirement, his wisdom was sought during Citibank India’s rebranding efforts post a major fraud incident.
Contributions Beyond Banking
Victor Menezes was also actively involved with the American India Foundation and generously contributed $3 million to IIT Bombay, reflecting his commitment to education and community service. He is survived by his wife, Tara, and four children.
