V Narayanan: The New Face of ISRO
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has officially announced the appointment of V Narayanan as the new Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Secretary of the Department of Space, effective from 14 January 2025. This two-year tenure marks a significant milestone in Narayanan’s illustrious career.
Currently serving as the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), one of ISRO’s major centers, Narayanan is a distinguished scientist with nearly four decades of experience in rocket and spacecraft propulsion. His expertise and leadership have been pivotal in advancing India’s space capabilities.
Under Narayanan’s leadership, LPSC has achieved remarkable feats, delivering 164 liquid propulsion systems for 41 launch vehicle and 31 spacecraft missions over the last five years. His focus on R&D and infrastructure development in the Liquid Propulsion sector has been a game-changer for ISRO.
Education and Early Career
Narayanan holds an M.Tech in Cryogenic Engineering from IIT-Kharagpur, where he was awarded a silver medal. He also received a Gold Medal from the Astronautical Society of India (ASI). His early career at ISRO involved significant contributions to solid propulsion for sounding rockets and pivotal missions like the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) and Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
Who Will He Succeed?
Narayanan will succeed S. Somanath, who has led ISRO since January 2022 and was instrumental in various groundbreaking projects, including the Gaganyaan programme and the LVM3-M1/Chandrayaan-2 mission.
