Uttarakhand Avalanche: A High-Risk Zone Strikes Again
DEHRADUN: In a tragic incident, an avalanche struck the BRO workers’ camp near Mana village in Uttarakhand, burying at least 57 individuals, with 22 still reported missing. This area is classified as one of the most avalanche-prone zones in the state.
The avalanche impacted a section of the national highway linking Mana to Ghastoli, echoing past incidents in the region. In April 2021, a similar event claimed the lives of 10 BRO workers in the Malari-Sumna area, close to the India-China border.
Frequent Avalanche Incidents
According to the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA), various avalanches have been recorded across the state’s higher reaches, including Gaumukh Glacier and Hemkund Sahib. These occurrences are common in Himalayan regions with altitudes over 3,500 metres and slopes exceeding 30 degrees.
Expert Insights on Avalanche Risk
Piyoosh Rautela, former executive director of USDMA, emphasized the need for mapping avalanche-prone areas. “Just like landslide-prone zones, avalanche-prone areas can also be identified. No camps or settlements should be established in these high-risk zones,” he stated. Most avalanche victims are typically tourists or workers, as the region’s inhabited villages are often migratory, relocating to lower areas during winter.
