India’s Impact on UN Peacekeeping

India stands as a cornerstone of UN peacekeeping, with its women peacekeepers proving essential for mission success. UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, emphasized the importance of female representation in peacekeeping during his upcoming visit to New Delhi for the conference titled “Enhancing the Role of Women in Peacekeeping: A Global South Experience” on February 24-25.

Empowering Women in Peacekeeping

Lacroix noted that missions with greater female participation yield better operational outcomes and contribute to lasting peace. He praised India’s leadership in promoting gender parity and the deployment of the first all-female Formed Police Unit in Liberia in 2007.

Building Trust in Conflict Zones

Indian women peacekeepers excel in fostering community trust and enhancing humanitarian efforts in challenging environments. Their ability to engage with local women and navigate cultural sensitivities significantly bolsters mission effectiveness.

The Future of Peacekeeping

As peacekeeping evolves, it is crucial to address gender barriers and enhance the safety of all personnel. Lacroix called for increased nominations of women to senior leadership positions within UN missions, noting that only one of the 11 peacekeeping operations is currently led by a woman.
