A Tragic Incident: Tiger Cub Killed on Uttarakhand Road

A six-month-old tiger cub tragically lost its life after being struck by an unidentified vehicle while crossing the Rampur-Haldwani road in the Tanda range of the Terai Central Forest Division. This unfortunate event occurred around 9 PM on Tuesday, approximately 1.5 km from Sanjay Van. Upon receiving reports, Tanda range officer Roop Narayan Gautam and his team promptly arrived at the scene and took custody of the cub’s carcass.

Investigation Underway

Gautam stated, “The vehicle that struck the cub remains unidentified. An autopsy will be conducted Wednesday, and we are initiating legal action against the unknown driver.” He emphasized that this stretch of road is a known crossing point for wildlife, including tigers and elephants. Just days prior, a tigress was spotted in the vicinity, suggesting that the deceased cub likely belonged to her.

Recurring Threats to Wildlife

Sadly, this incident is not isolated. On January 6 of last year, a six-year-old tiger was also fatally hit by a car. In 2023, another six-year-old tiger met a similar fate on the Haldwani road near Rudrapur. Overall, Uttarakhand recorded 15 tiger deaths in 2024, a slight decrease from 22 in 2023. These fatalities stem from various causes, including natural factors, territorial fights, and road accidents.
Authorities are increasingly concerned about the impact of road traffic on wildlife movements, even as poaching cases have significantly declined.
