The Call for Justice: A Mother’s Plea for Women’s Safety in West Bengal
Kolkata: The mother of the RG Kar hospital medic, tragically raped and murdered, has made a heartfelt appeal for a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek justice for her daughter.
On International Women’s Day, the grieving mother raised critical concerns over women’s safety in West Bengal, questioning the security measures in place for women, especially in healthcare settings.
“I would like to meet the PM and appeal to him to intervene in the matter and look into our appeal for justice for our deceased doctor,” she expressed.
The 31-year-old junior doctor was brutally raped and murdered at the state-run hospital in Kolkata on August 9 last year, leading to nationwide outrage.
“Our daughter had dreamt big, and we never thought she would have to die like this. It’s been seven months, but where is justice? We do not even have the death certificate,” she lamented.
“If a woman doctor is unsafe at her workplace, then where is her security?” she questioned, emphasizing the urgent need for improved safety protocols for women professionals.
In response to her wish to meet the PM, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul stated, “There is a process to seek an appointment with the PM. I am sure that our Prime Minister will give them some time and listen to their appeal.”
Trinamool Congress leader and state Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya acknowledged the right of citizens to seek appointments but highlighted the actions taken by the state government in response to the incident.
A sessions court sentenced the convicted rapist to life imprisonment, yet the struggle for justice continues as both the CBI and the state government appeal for capital punishment.
