Shashi Tharoor Admits Mistakes on India’s Russia-Ukraine Stance
NEW DELHI: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor recently acknowledged his earlier criticism of India’s neutral stance in the Russia-Ukraine war, stating it has left him with “egg on his face.” Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue in Delhi, he recognized that India’s balanced policy has positioned it as a key player in promoting lasting peace, allowing Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Tharoor’s Change of Heart
Tharoor, who initially called for India to condemn Russia’s actions, reflected, “I am still wiping the egg off my face because I was one of the few in Parliament who criticized India’s position in February 2022.” He acknowledged that while his concerns were rooted in the violation of the UN Charter and Ukraine’s sovereignty, the past three years have demonstrated the efficacy of India’s neutral approach.
Potential for Peacekeeping Missions
In a personal capacity, Tharoor suggested that India might consider sending peacekeepers if a peace settlement is reached between Russia and Ukraine. He emphasized that, given Russia’s rejection of NATO peacekeepers, non-European forces could be a viable option. Citing India’s rich history in peacekeeping missions, he indicated that there would likely be minimal resistance to this idea among Indian parliamentarians.
As India has participated in over 49 UN peacekeeping missions, its commitment to global stability remains strong, showcasing its readiness to contribute positively to international peace efforts.
