Combating Smuggling: The Need for Synergy Between Technology and Human Intelligence
New Delhi – To effectively combat the smuggling of weapons and narcotic drugs, a synergy between technology and human intelligence is imperative, according to former Deputy National Security Advisor Pankaj Kumar Singh. Speaking at the Anti-Smuggling Day event organized by Ficci CASCADE, Singh emphasized the increasing role of the dark net in facilitating illegal trades.
Dark Net: A Growing Concern
“Today, a lot of drugs and weapons are being traded on the dark net. Law enforcement agencies are actively scanning these platforms to gather intelligence and apprehend those involved,” Singh stated. The collaboration of technology with human creativity is essential in this fight against smuggling.
According to the Smuggling in India Report released by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), about 8,224 kg of contraband worth Rs 2,242 crore was seized in the 2023-24 fiscal year, with cocaine seizures notably increasing over the past five years.
Challenges in Enforcement
Mohan Kumar Singh, a member of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), highlighted the challenges faced in targeting the masterminds behind smuggling operations. He stressed the importance of having adequate data, analytical tools, and timely inter-agency coordination. The DRI has initiated a ‘smuggling coordination platform’ to enhance information sharing across agencies.
Community Involvement
Anil Rajput, Chairman of FICCI CASCADE, pointed out the crucial role of consumers in the fight against smuggling. He urged for increased awareness and education among youth regarding the implications of smuggling.
