Taekwondo Director Removed Over Match and Medal Fixing Allegations at 38th National Games

Scandal Strikes the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand

In a shocking turn of events at the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand, the Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC) has removed the competition director for taekwondo, T Praveen Kumar, over serious allegations of match and medal fixing. The decision was made following an inquiry into complaints that officials had predetermined results in 10 out of 16 weight categories, reportedly selling medals for exorbitant prices: gold for Rs 3 lakh, silver for Rs 2 lakh, and bronze for Rs 1 lakh.

Integrity of the Games in Question

The three-member Prevention of Manipulation of Competition (PMC) committee, which conducted the inquiry, included R K Sudhanshu (principal secretary, Uttarakhand), B K Sinha (IPS, retd.), and Dushyant Sharma (SSP, J&K). They found credible evidence supporting the complaints and recommended Kumar’s removal to uphold the integrity of the Games.

GTCC chairperson Sunaina Kumari confirmed the decision, emphasizing the importance of maintaining fairness in the competition. “To maintain the integrity of the Games, we have accepted the PMC’s recommendations,” she stated.

Calls for Fair Play

IOA president PT Usha expressed her dismay at the scandal, stating it was “shocking and sad” that medals were allegedly decided even before the competition began. She emphasized the need for fair play, which is vital for allowing athletes to compete genuinely at the highest level.

The taekwondo events, featuring 16 Kyorugi and 10 Poomsae competitions, are set to take place at Milam Hall, Haldwani, from Tuesday to Saturday. To prevent further manipulation, the PMC has recommended the replacement of the director of competition and several technical officials.
