Supreme Court Warns Uttarakhand for Ignoring Eco-Zones Affidavit Deadline

Supreme Court’s Strong Warning to Uttarakhand Government Over Eco-Sensitive Zones

In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India has expressed its dissatisfaction with the Uttarakhand government’s failure to comply with its directives regarding eco-sensitive zones (ESZs) around the renowned Corbett and Rajaji national parks. These parks are not only vital habitats for wildlife but also popular destinations for nature enthusiasts across the country.

Background of the Case

On February 20, the Supreme Court ordered the Uttarakhand government to complete the formalities concerning the notification of ESZs for both national parks within a two-week timeframe. However, during a recent hearing, the court found that the state had failed to submit the required affidavit or even send a representative to address the issue.

Serious Concerns Raised

The bench, led by Justices B R Gavai and K Vinod Chandran, highlighted the casual approach of the state towards complying with Supreme Court orders. Notably, another counsel, A K Sharma, appeared via video conference and indicated that the state would submit the affidavit on the same day, despite the deadline having already passed.

Justice Gavai remarked, “The state appears to be taking SC orders in a very casual manner,” emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. To ensure accountability, the court has mandated the presence of the Uttarakhand chief secretary in the next hearing scheduled for March 19.

The Importance of Eco-Sensitive Zones

Eco-sensitive zones play a crucial role in protecting wildlife habitats and maintaining ecological balance. They are designed to act as buffer zones around protected areas, minimizing human impact on these fragile ecosystems. The delay in notifying these zones poses a threat to biodiversity and conservation efforts in the region.
