Supreme Court Criticizes Farmer Leaders for Hindering Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s Hospitalization

The Supreme Court criticized farmer leaders for preventing Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s hospitalization amid his fast-unto-death. The court is addressing a contempt petition against Punjab officials for failing to comply with a prior order.

The Supreme Court of India (SC) on Saturday, December 28, expressed serious concerns over the health of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a fast-unto-death since November 26. Justice Surya Kant criticized the Punjab authorities for their inaction in facilitating Dallewal’s hospitalization as his health continues to deteriorate.

Justice Kant emphasized to the Punjab Chief Secretary, “Please communicate to them that those who are resisting Dallewal’s hospitalisation are not his well-wishers.” This statement highlights the urgency of the situation and the responsibility of officials to prioritize Dallewal’s welfare.

The Supreme Court is currently hearing a contempt petition against the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Punjab for failing to comply with a December 20 order mandating medical aid for Dallewal and encouraging him to seek hospital treatment.

Time Till December 31 to Comply

The apex court has set a deadline of December 31 for the Punjab government to persuade Dallewal to seek medical attention. The court has also directed the state to report compliance by December 28.

Background of Farmers’ Protest

Dallewal’s indefinite fast at the Khanauri border is aimed at urging the Centre to accept farmers’ demands, including a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. The ongoing farmers’ protests highlight the critical issues faced by the agricultural community in India.
