NEW DELHI: In a significant development, the Supreme Court has permitted the transportation and disposal of hazardous chemical waste from the Bhopal gas tragedy site to a treatment-storage-disposal-facility (TSDF) located in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh. This decision follows a comprehensive evaluation by the Madhya Pradesh High Court and consultations with esteemed institutions like NEERI (National Environmental Engineering Research Institute) and the Central Pollution Control Board.

The Supreme Court, represented by Justices B R Gavai and A G Masih, emphasized the credibility of NEERI in addressing environmental issues. “Whenever the court finds difficulty in assessing a question with regard to environmental damages, it always takes NEERI on board,” stated the court in its order.
