Sunil Gavaskar Defends Rohit Sharma Against ‘Fat’ Remarks, Emphasizes Performance Over Appearance

Sunil Gavaskar Defends Rohit Sharma: It’s Performance That Matters, Not Weight

In recent days, former Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar came to the defense of current captain Rohit Sharma following critical comments made by Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed about Sharma’s weight. Gavaskar emphasized that cricket performance should be the focal point, not body size.
Gavaskar, speaking to India Today, remarked, “If you want only slim guys, then you should go to a modeling competition and pick all the models. It’s not about that.” He underscored the importance of skill and mental strength in cricket, stating, “It’s about how well you can play cricket.”
He cited the example of Mumbai cricketer Sarfaraz Khan, who has faced similar scrutiny. Despite being criticized for his weight, Sarfaraz has shown extraordinary performance on the field, proving that weight does not equate to ability. “If he scores 150 for India in a Test match and follows it up with another two or three fifty-plus scores, then what’s the issue?” Gavaskar asked.
The legendary cricketer further asserted, “I don’t think size has anything to do with it. It’s your mental strength—whether you can last the distance—that’s the most important thing. Bat well, bat for long, and score runs.”
Following the backlash on social media, Shama Mohamed acknowledged her comments were inappropriate and requested the removal of her post from X platform. In her now-deleted post, she had labeled Rohit as “fat for a sportsman” and critiqued his captaincy.
As Rohit Sharma prepares to lead India in the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against Australia, the focus will be on performance and strategy. This match is a chance for India to seek redemption after previous losses to Australia in major tournaments.
