Sunil Gavaskar Criticizes Rohit Sharma’s Justification for Dropping Shubman Gill in Boxing Day Test

Rohit Sharma’s Clarification on Shubman Gill’s Exclusion: A Controversial Decision

Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma recently addressed the media regarding the omission of Shubman Gill from the Boxing Day Test against Australia. Rohit clarified that Gill was not “dropped” but rather replaced by all-rounder Washington Sundar to bolster the lower middle-order batting. Despite this clarification, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar criticized the decision, stating that it effectively sidelined Gill.
Rohit explained, “Look, I had a chat with him. There’s no way when you’re leaving someone out, you will have a chat. The chat was clear that he was not dropped. We just wanted that extra bit of cushion in the bowling.” He emphasized that the inclusion of Sundar aimed to strengthen the team’s overall performance without compromising the batting line-up.
However, Gavaskar was unimpressed with Rohit’s reasoning. During a discussion on Star Sports, he questioned the effectiveness of Sundar’s bowling, pointing out, “How much bowling did you give to Washington Sundar? What cushion are you talking about?” He further stated, “You can say you omitted or dropped him; both are the same. In the end, that guy was sitting in the dugout and was not on the ground.”
In the match, Sundar bowled just 19 overs, taking one wicket, while contributing a vital 50 runs in India’s first innings. Unfortunately, India fell short in their chase of 340 runs, losing by 184 runs and trailing 1-2 in the five-match series.
As cricket fans continue to debate the merits of the team’s decisions, it is clear that the pressure is mounting on the Indian squad to regroup and perform better in the upcoming matches.
