Six Bangladeshi Nationals Apprehended in Meghalaya
SHILLONG: In a recent operation, Border Security Force (BSF) personnel apprehended six Bangladeshi nationals in Meghalaya on Sunday. The group, which included individuals who previously worked as masons in Mumbai, was intercepted while attempting to re-enter India in search of employment.
The operation took place after the BSF received a tip-off regarding the movement of these individuals across the India-Bangladesh border. Four of the apprehended nationals were from the West Jaintia Hills district, while two hailed from the South Garo Hills district. Notably, among those detained was a woman who intended to travel to Mumbai for her husband’s medical treatment.
Meghalaya’s Border Situation
Meghalaya shares a 443 km-long border with Bangladesh, and approximately 20% of this border remains unfenced due to challenging terrain. This makes it easier for individuals to cross over for various reasons, including employment and medical needs.
Importance of Vigilance
The BSF continues to enhance its surveillance and operational capabilities to prevent illegal crossings and safeguard national security. The recent apprehensions highlight the ongoing challenges faced by border security forces in curbing illegal immigration. It also underscores the need for continued vigilance and coordination among security agencies.
