Delimitation Controversy: Siddaramaiah Challenges Amit Shah’s Claims
NEW DELHI: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has voiced skepticism over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent assurance that southern states will not lose any Lok Sabha seats due to delimitation. In a series of posts on X, Siddaramaiah highlighted studies suggesting that these states could actually lose 26 seats if the delimitation is based on population data.
Allegations of Confusion
Siddaramaiah criticized Shah’s statement, calling it “not credible” and accusing him of “deliberately creating confusion.” He stated, “It appears that either he is lacking information or there is a clear intention to do injustice to the southern states, including Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh.”
Impact of Population Control
The Chief Minister argued that southern states have effectively controlled their population and made significant developmental strides over the last 50 years. In contrast, states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are lagging behind. He asserted that if constituency reorganization occurs based on recent population data, southern states will lose representation while northern states gain.
Call for Collective Action
“Efforts are being made to hold discussions with neighboring southern states to organize a collective fight against these injustices,” Siddaramaiah added. He expressed concern over the central government’s intentions, suggesting they aim to penalize southern states for their political choices.
Counter Claims by Amit Shah
In response, Amit Shah reaffirmed that no state would lose seats and that southern states would gain constituencies based on population proportion. This ongoing debate highlights the political tensions surrounding delimitation and its implications for representation.
