Famous Indian film director and screenwriter Shyam Benegal passed away on Monday, December 23, at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai. The veteran filmmaker, who was undergoing dialysis and visiting the hospital nearly three times a week, remained passionate about cinema, even at the age of 90.
Celebrating a Life of Cinema
Benegal’s contribution to Indian cinema is akin to that of Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak. His notable films include Ankur, Nishant, Manthan, Bhumika, Junoon, and Mandi. Just a week before his passing, Benegal celebrated his 90th birthday, where Indian film icon Shabana Azmi shared a heartfelt photo capturing the legendary director surrounded by prominent actors.
A Humble Celebration
On his 90th birthday, Benegal told the news agency PTI, “We all grow old. I don’t do anything great (on my birthday). It may be a special day but I don’t celebrate it specifically. I cut a cake at the office with my team.” Despite his humility, the love and respect he garnered from the film fraternity were evident in the celebrations.
Looking Ahead
During the festivities, Benegal mentioned he was actively working on two to three projects, emphasizing their unique nature. “They are all for the big screen,” he stated, showcasing his unwavering commitment to filmmaking.
A Glorious Legacy
Born in Tirumalagiri, Hyderabad, Benegal’s journey began at the age of 12 when he made his first film. After earning a Master’s degree in Economics from Osmania University, he rose from a copywriter to one of the most revered directors in Indian cinema. His accolades include the prestigious Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan for his contributions to art and cinema.
