Maharashtra Political Drama Unfolds Over Maha Kumbh Attendance
NEW DELHI: The political landscape in Maharashtra has been stirred as Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde recently criticized Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray for his absence at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. Shinde’s statement suggested that Thackeray’s reluctance to attend the pilgrimage indicated a fear of openly identifying as a Hindu.
Shinde remarked, “Those who skipped Maha Kumbh should be asked why they skipped it. They keep saying they are Hindus. Bal Thackeray proudly gave the slogan ‘garv se kaho hum Hindu hain (proclaim it proudly that we are Hindu) but now they are scared of calling themselves Hindus.” His comments were a pointed response to the absence of Uddhav and the Gandhi family from the event.
Uddhav Thackeray did not shy away from a rebuttal, stating that a mere dip in the Ganga would not cleanse the “sin of betraying Maharashtra.” Speaking at an event for Marathi Bhasha Gaurav Diwas, he subtly criticized the BJP, indicating that neo-Hindutvawadis have no right to preach about Lord Ram to his party.
The Maha Kumbh, a significant and revered pilgrimage for Hindus, commenced on January 13 and concluded on February 26. While Shinde and his Shiv Sena MLAs attended the event, Uddhav’s absence has sparked considerable debate.
