Demand for Investigation into Civilian Deaths in Jammu & Kashmir
NEW DELHI: Sheikh Abdul Rashid, the Lok Sabha member from Baramulla, raised a significant concern during the recent budget session, demanding a comprehensive investigation into the deaths of two civilians in Jammu and Kashmir. Known as Engineer Rashid, the Independent MP, who is currently out on parole from Tihar Jail, highlighted the tragic incident involving Wasim Ahmad Mir and Makhan Din, who were allegedly killed by security forces.
In a passionate plea during the Zero Hour, Rashid emphasized, “Hamara khoon sasta nahin hain” (our blood is not cheap), urging the government to take immediate action. His remarks have sparked widespread attention, reflecting the ongoing tensions in the region.
Rashid is serving parole granted by the Delhi High Court to attend Parliament sessions on February 11 and 13. Having been in Tihar Jail since 2019 on charges of funding separatist activities, his return to the legislative assembly has raised both eyebrows and discussions about the political climate in Jammu and Kashmir.
Call for Infrastructure Development in Remote Areas
Apart from the demand for an investigation, Rashid also called for the construction of a tunnel to connect the far-flung areas of Keran, Karnah, and Machil in Kupwara. These regions are often cut off from the rest of the country for six months, highlighting the urgent need for better infrastructure to ensure accessibility and safety for the residents.
Congress MP Voices Concerns Over Safety
In a related development, Congress MP from Sasaram, Manoj Kumar, also spoke out during the Zero Hour, expressing his fears for his safety following a violent incident in Bihar’s Kaimur district. Kumar, who was critically injured in a road rage incident, called for serious attention to issues of safety for public representatives.
