Shaheen Afridi Opens Up on Confrontation with Matthew Breetzke
Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Afridi recently addressed the on-field incident with South African batter Matthew Breetzke during an ODI match in the tri-nation series. The heated exchange occurred when Shaheen intentionally impeded Breetzke’s path while running for a single, resulting in physical contact and a brief verbal spat before officials intervened.
A Strategic Move
In a candid revelation, Afridi admitted that his actions were a strategic attempt to disrupt Breetzke’s focus in order to secure a crucial wicket. “For the first time, Matthew didn’t say anything. I kept teasing him to get a wicket. Whatever happened on the field stayed there. Matthew and I met, shook hands, and became good friends,” Afridi explained.
Consequences and Acknowledgment
The International Cricket Council (ICC) did not take the incident lightly, imposing a 25 percent match fee fine on Afridi for violating Article 2.12 of the Code of Conduct, which pertains to inappropriate physical contact during matches. Despite the fine, Afridi remains focused on the game and emphasizes the importance of sportsmanship.
Challenges for Pakistan
Afridi also acknowledged Pakistan’s ongoing struggles in the final overs of matches during the series. “We admit that we haven’t been performing well in the final overs,” he stated, highlighting the team’s commitment to addressing these performance issues as they gear up for upcoming challenges.
