Mumbai’s Political Drama: Security Downgraded for Shiv Sena MLAs
MUMBAI: The ongoing cold war between CM Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde has intensified, as the home department downgraded the security cover for over 20 Shiv Sena MLAs from Y+ category to just one constable. This move has raised eyebrows, especially since security for some other Sena leaders has also been withdrawn.
Security Cuts and Political Maneuvering
In a bid to balance the scales, the home department also withdrew security from a few BJP and Ajit Pawar-led NCP politicians, but the number of Sena leaders affected remains significantly higher. Tensions between the BJP and Sena escalated over issues like guardian minister posts for Raigad and Nashik, leading to further disputes in other areas of governance.
Shinde recently held a review meeting for the industries department, a move seen as a direct challenge to Fadnavis, who had conducted a similar meeting earlier this year. Political observers suggest these meetings are more about optics than real authority.
Security Protocols and Threat Perception
The home department confirmed that the threat perception committee conducted a realistic review of security for both politicians and non-political figures. As a result, many legislators have seen their security downgraded, while former ministers have had their protection completely withdrawn.
While high-profile figures such as Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan and Uddhav Thackeray continue to receive the highest level of security, the recent changes have sparked discussions about the implications for political stability in Maharashtra.
