Scott Boland Reflects on His Memorable MCG Six-Wicket Haul Ahead of Boxing Day Test

Scott Boland Reflects on His Memorable Boxing Day Test Experience

As Australia gears up for the much-anticipated Boxing Day Test, seamer Scott Boland takes a moment to reflect on his unforgettable debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) during the 2021 Ashes series. Boland’s six-wicket haul against England, where he recorded an astonishing 6-7, played a pivotal role in Australia’s innings and 14-run victory, helping the team retain the Ashes.
“It’s funny. All I wanted to do from when I was growing up was play Test cricket, and then I was walking off at lunch, and I was like, ‘Geez, I’m glad it’s done’,” Boland shared. Despite initially expecting a challenging day, the experience exceeded his expectations, leaving him in disbelief over how events unfolded.
Reflecting on that day, Boland remarked, “I thought it was going to be a bit of a slog. I still can’t believe it, really. I only bowled 24 balls or something like that. I guess it was all those years I’d put in playing for Victoria on wickets out there that weren’t in my favour as much. It all sort of worked out on that one day.”
With Josh Hazlewood sidelined due to a calf injury, Boland is set to make his return for the upcoming match. His recent performance in Adelaide, where he took five wickets in a ten-wicket win against India, has bolstered his confidence.
While Boland aspires to play every match, he acknowledges the fierce competition within the squad. “I’d love to play every game. But I’m comfortable with my position in the squad. I know that in front of me are three of the best fast bowlers Australia’s ever had,” he admitted.
Emphasizing his preparation, Boland stated, “I’m someone who can’t afford to bowl any bad ball.” His meticulous routine, influenced by former bowling coach Mick Lewis, ensures he maintains peak performance.
As he aims to make the most of his opportunities, Boland expressed, “I just want to play as many as I can. Whatever opportunities come up, wherever they might be in the world, I just want to be ready to go.”
