Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut Clarifies Stance on Local Body Polls
Sanjay Raut, a prominent leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), recently addressed the media to clarify his party’s decision to contest local body elections independently. He emphasized that this move is intended to strengthen the party’s grassroots foundation rather than indicate any rift within the opposition INDIA bloc or the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance.
Strengthening Grassroots: A Focus on Local Empowerment
Raut articulated, “The MVA was formed for assembly polls and the INDIA bloc for Lok Sabha elections. Local body elections are meant to empower party workers and enhance the organization at the grassroots level. I or my party have never called for the dissolution of these alliances.” His earlier remarks about limited opportunities for workers had sparked speculation regarding opposition unity, but he clarified that these comments were misinterpreted.
Rebuilding Organizational Strength Post-Elections
Highlighting the need for MVA allies to focus on grassroots organization, Raut pointed out the significance of working at the booth level, especially after the MVA faced a setback in the November 2024 Maharashtra assembly polls. The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance secured a commanding 230 out of 288 seats, leaving the MVA with just 46.
Criticism of Government’s Handling of Local Issues
In addition, Raut criticized NCP (SP) leader Sharad Pawar for engaging in discussions with Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis regarding the unrest in Beed and Parbhani. He accused the government of failing to provide justice for the murder of sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh and the death of Somnath Suryavanshi, incidents that have raised concerns about caste conflicts in the state.
