SA20 League: A Triumph for South African Cricket
As the SA20 league enters its third season, it has marked a significant milestone by achieving sustainability in South African cricket. With the recent match between Paarl Royals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape, the league celebrated its 100th game, solidifying its status as a beloved fixture in the cricketing world.
Former Proteas skipper and SA20 league commissioner Graeme Smith described this moment as “emotional,” reflecting on the challenges faced to attract six franchises and the rapid progression into Season 3. “The outstanding cricket, coupled with the return of fans to the stadiums, has been a highlight,” Smith noted, emphasizing the deep connection South African cricket has with its supporters.
To enhance viewership, SA20 partnered with local broadcaster SuperSport and secured international coverage through platforms like Disney+ Hotstar in India. Smith clarified that while the Indian market is crucial, the league’s focus extends beyond it, aiming to attract commercial partners and a wider audience.
Despite facing stiff competition from other T20 leagues like the BBL and BPL, SA20 has carved its niche. The league’s future is bright, with plans for upcoming seasons already outlined, ensuring cricket fans can look forward to more thrilling matches.
Smith expressed a desire for improved pitch conditions, especially with South Africa co-hosting the 2027 ODI World Cup. He aims for SA20 to become the top choice for players outside the IPL, especially with T20’s inclusion in the LA 2028 Olympics.
