Revolutionizing Livestock Breeding in India: The Role of Artificial Insemination
In a significant development for the livestock sector, India is set to enhance the genetic quality of sheep and goat breeds using artificial insemination technology. This innovative approach, which has long been utilized for cattle, will now also apply to small ruminants, marking a new era in animal husbandry.
What is Artificial Insemination?
Artificial insemination (AI) involves the deliberate introduction of sperm into a female’s reproductive tract to achieve pregnancy without natural mating. This method allows for the propagation of superior genetic traits, thus improving overall livestock quality.
The New Initiative Under National Livestock Mission (NLM)
As part of the National Livestock Mission (NLM), the government aims to boost animal productivity across various sectors, including meat, milk, and wool production. Under the newly released operational guidelines, the establishment of frozen semen production laboratories for goats and liquid semen production facilities for sheep will be prioritized. This initiative will ensure that elite animal semen is readily accessible to nearby states.
Benefits of Genetic Improvement
The focus on selective breeding will not only enhance the quality of sheep and goat breeds but will also support the preservation of indigenous horse, donkey, and camel breeds. This is crucial in combating the detrimental effects of indiscriminate breeding practices that have threatened many resilient breeds in India.
Awareness Campaigns for Farmers
To promote these guidelines, the animal husbandry ministry will launch nationwide awareness campaigns during the ‘Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare Month’ from January 14 to February 13. This initiative aims to educate livestock farmers about the new schemes and encourage their participation in the livestock sector.
