Rajasthan Minister Kirori Lal Meena Accuses Own Government of Phone Tapping Over Graft Charges
JAIPUR: In a dramatic turn of events, Rajasthan Agriculture Minister Kirori Lal Meena has sparked controversy within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by accusing his own government of phone tapping and surveillance. This revelation comes on the heels of Meena raising concerns over suspected corruption in police recruitment.
During a recent event near Jaipur, Meena publicly criticized the BJP government, claiming he was being monitored “just like before,” referring to the previous Congress administration led by Ashok Gehlot. “I raised several corruption-related issues, leading to the arrest of 50 Sub-Inspector recruits. When I demanded the cancellation of the 2021 recruitment exam, my concerns were ignored. Now, CID personnel have been stationed at every corner to keep an eye on me, and my phone is also being tapped,” he asserted in a video.
The Congress party swiftly seized on this controversy, calling for the resignation of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, arguing that subjecting a minister to phone tapping is a serious offense. Meena’s absence from the ongoing budget session has fueled speculation of a rift within the BJP, although Minister of State for Home Jawahar Singh Bedam refuted the allegations of surveillance.
As the uproar continued in the assembly, it led to multiple adjournments, with opposition MLAs seizing the opportunity to target the treasury benches. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel attempted to downplay the situation by referencing past phone-tapping allegations against the Congress government, which had emerged during former Deputy CM Sachin Pilot’s revolt against Gehlot.
In an effort to quell the rumors, Patel held a press conference stating, “The minister has already clarified in the assembly that no phone tapping has taken place. I will meet my cabinet colleague (Meena) soon to hear his grievances, if any.” However, a party functionary admitted that Meena’s allegations presented yet another embarrassment for the state government.
