Railways to Implement ‘Holding Areas’ at 60 Stations After New Delhi Stampede

Railways to Enhance Crowd Management After New Delhi Stampede

NEW DELHI: Following the tragic stampede at New Delhi station that resulted in 18 fatalities, the Indian Railways is taking significant steps to improve passenger safety. A new initiative will involve the creation of ‘holding areas’ at 60 high-traffic stations across the country, especially during festivals and significant events.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that these designated areas will help regulate the flow of passengers, allowing entry to platforms based on train departure times. Among the stations selected for this initiative are New Delhi, Patna, Varanasi, and Surat. The effectiveness of holding areas has already been observed at stations in the Prayagraj area.

New Crowd Management Manual in the Works

To further bolster safety, a comprehensive crowd management manual will be developed, merging existing guidelines. This manual aims to establish standard operating procedures for handling passenger surges during busy periods. Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of raising awareness among passengers regarding the dangers of blocking passageways, stating, “We cannot fine passengers for sitting on stairs, so we need to create awareness through media.”

Looking Ahead: Engaging with Stakeholders

In light of recent events, the railways will also conduct a special campaign to gather insights and suggestions from various stakeholders, including hawkers, coolies, street vendors, and passengers. This collaborative approach aims to resolve ongoing issues and enhance the overall travel experience.
