Rahul Gandhi Calls for Purge in Gujarat Congress
In a bold move to rejuvenate the Congress party in Gujarat, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi recently addressed party workers in Ahmedabad, emphasizing the need for a significant overhaul within the state unit. During his speech, Gandhi acknowledged the party’s shortcomings in meeting public expectations and vowed to identify and remove those functionaries suspected of working covertly for the BJP.
Addressing the Party’s Challenges
Gandhi stated, “Gujarat is stuck and wants to find a way, but Congress in Gujarat is not in a position to show the way.” He reiterated that Congress holds a 40% vote share in the state, and a modest increase of just 5% could potentially bring the party back to power. “One out of every two persons in Gujarat is a Congress supporter,” he noted, highlighting the party’s still-relevant presence in the region.
Distinction Between Party Loyalists
In a clear division within the party ranks, Gandhi pointed out the existence of two types of Congress members: those genuinely committed to the party’s ideology and those he accused of being disconnected from the grassroots or colluding with the BJP. He emphasized the importance of loyalty to the party’s core values, urging members to prioritize the party’s mission over individual electoral victories.
Preparing for Change
As the Congress party gears up for an AICC session in Ahmedabad on April 8 and 9—the first in 64 years—State Congress president Shaktisinh Gohil pledged to identify “sleeper cells” within the party that are loyal to the BJP. Alongside him, Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani expressed that only those who actively fight for the rights of local communities will receive leadership opportunities moving forward.
