Maharashtra Elections: Concerns Over Voter List Irregularities
NEW DELHI: The political landscape in Maharashtra is heating up as the INDIA bloc, comprising Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (SP), raises significant concerns over alleged irregularities in the voter lists ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha and assembly elections. The coalition has demanded a detailed list of voters, highlighting the addition of 39 lakh new voters in just five months, contrasting sharply with the 32 lakh added between the 2019 and 2024 polls.
Rahul Gandhi’s Allegations
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has pointed out that while the alliance’s votes have remained stable, the influx of new voters appears to favor the BJP. He emphasized that Maharashtra’s adult population is approximately 9.54 crore, yet the voter count stands at 9.7 crore, raising questions about the legitimacy of these additions. “We want to understand who these new voters are,” he stated, suggesting a possible manipulation of the voter list.
Shiv Sena’s Remarks
Adding to the controversy, Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena (UBT) referred to the new voters as “floating” voters, suggesting they may not be genuine. He criticized the Election Commission for its lack of transparency and accountability, insinuating that it operates under the influence of the BJP government.
Concerns Over Voter Deletion
Moreover, the parties are alarmed by the deletion of voter names, particularly among SC/ST and minority communities. Supriya Sule of NCP (SP) noted that confusion regarding party symbols has further complicated the electoral landscape, describing it as a “multi-faceted attack” involving EVMs and voter lists.
As the parties navigate these challenges, they remain committed to safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process and the Constitution.
