Rahul Gandhi Calls for Restoration of Peace in Manipur
NEW DELHI: In a recent statement, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi asserted that the resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh was driven by increasing public pressure, the Supreme Court’s involvement, and the Congress party’s no-confidence motion. He accused Singh of fostering division in the state, holding Prime Minister Narendra Modi accountable for allowing the situation to escalate.
“PM Allowed Biren Singh to Continue Despite Bloodshed”
Gandhi remarked, “For nearly two years, BJP’s CM Biren Singh instigated division in Manipur. PM Modi allowed him to continue despite the violence, loss of life, and the destruction of the idea of India in Manipur.” He emphasized that Singh’s resignation was a consequence of mounting public outcry and political maneuvers.
Calls for PM Modi to Visit Manipur
Additionally, Gandhi urged PM Modi to make an immediate visit to Manipur, stressing that restoring peace is paramount. “PM Modi must visit Manipur at once, listen to the people, and finally explain his plan to bring back normalcy,” he stated.
Biren Singh’s Resignation Amid Political Turmoil
Singh tendered his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla nearly two years after ethnic violence erupted in the state. Accompanied by BJP leaders, he expressed gratitude for the central government’s support during his tenure.
Ethnic Violence and Political Fallout
The unrest in Manipur began on May 3, 2023, following a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM), leading to significant casualties and increased political tensions.
