Punjab Police Neutralize Suspect in Amritsar Temple Attack
CHANDIGARH/AMRITSAR: A man suspected of launching a grenade attack at Thakurdwara temple in Amritsar on March 15 was killed in a shootout with Punjab Police early Monday morning.
According to Amritsar police commissioner Gurpreet Bhullar, officers tracked the suspects, Gursidak Singh and his accomplice Vishal, to Bal Sikander village near Amritsar city around 6 AM. Upon attempting to arrest them, the suspects opened fire, injuring a head constable. The police retaliated, fatally wounding Gursidak, while Vishal managed to escape, prompting a manhunt.
The grenade attack, which occurred around 12:35 AM, targeted the Vaishnava shrine dedicated to Laddoo Gopal, a form of Krishna. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the priest was asleep at the time of the explosion and narrowly escaped harm.
Police Defense and Zero-Tolerance Policy
Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav addressed concerns regarding police shootings, stating, “If anyone fires at police, police will retaliate. This is not an aggressive policy. It is self-defense.” He emphasized the need for law enforcement to ensure that criminals face justice while highlighting the department’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against crime.
Yadav further noted potential involvement of external elements, specifically mentioning the ISI’s alleged role in similar incidents, as there have been at least 12 grenade attacks targeting police stations in Punjab since November 2024.
