BATHINDA/PATIALA: In a significant development, Punjab Police detained fasting farmer activist Jagjit Singh Dallewal and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha head Sarvan Singh Pandher along with other prominent agitators in Mohali. This occurred as they returned from a meeting with a central government delegation in Chandigarh, further escalating tensions surrounding ongoing farmer protests.
Evictions at Shambhu and Khanauri Borders
The police action unfolded despite assurances from Punjab ministers that the AAP government had no plans to disturb the protests at Shambhu and Khanauri. By late Wednesday evening, both sites had been cleared of protesters, with over 250 individuals detained from Khanauri and 110 from Shambhu. According to a senior Punjab Police officer, the detainees were shifted to a nearby marriage hall.
Recent Talks and Future Engagements
Wednesday marked the seventh round of discussions since February 2024, primarily focused on the critical demand for a law guaranteeing Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. Following the talks, central ministers appointed a joint secretary to engage with various stakeholders regarding the MSP issue. The next meeting is scheduled for May 4.
Police Action Draws Criticism
Farmers reported that police apprehended over 150 individuals in minutes, leading to minor scuffles during the detentions. BKU Ekta Sidhupur leader Kulwant Singh expressed concerns about belongings being left behind as authorities did not give farmers, especially the elderly, adequate time to vacate. While police claimed the operation was peaceful, farmers contested this narrative, alleging the use of force during the detainment.
