Punjab’s Opposition to US Deportee Flights
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has voiced a strong stance against the landing of US deportee flights in Amritsar. During a recent press interaction in Sardulgarh, Mann expressed his confidence that future flights will not be allowed to land in Punjab, stating, “I strongly opposed it (the landing of US planes carrying deportees) in Amritsar.”
A Call for Alternative Solutions
Mann’s opposition isn’t just a personal stance; it reflects a broader concern regarding the reputation of Punjab. He criticized the BJP-led central government for permitting these deportation flights, arguing that it tarnishes the state’s image and suggesting that Delhi should serve as an alternative landing site.
The recent arrival of three aircraft carrying deported Indian nationals has raised significant concerns. The flights, which landed on February 5, 15, and 16, brought back illegal immigrants from Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, and beyond, coinciding with a crackdown on undocumented immigrants under former US President Donald Trump’s policies.
Supporting the Deportees
In a compassionate move, Mann assured that his government would assist deportees in reintegrating into society. “We will give them opportunities. If any of them clear exams for posts like patwari, deputy superintendent of police, or sub-divisional officer, they will be given jobs. We will not let them go into depression,” he emphasized.
