Pune Driver’s Grudge Sparks Deadly Minibus Arson, Four Lives Lost

Pune Minibus Fire: A Grievous Act of Arson

PUNE: In a shocking turn of events, a 56-year-old driver, Janardhan Neelkanth Hambardikar, has confessed to setting fire to a staff minibus, leading to a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of four individuals and left ten others injured. This premeditated act, driven by grievances over salary and workplace treatment, has left the community in disbelief.

The Motive Behind the Tragedy

Hambardikar, an employee of Vyoma Graphics since 2006, expressed deep resentment towards his colleagues who, he claimed, mistreated him and ordered him around. His discontent stemmed not only from a perceived unfair salary and bonus compared to others but also from being denied timely meals, a critical need for someone with diabetes.

The Horrific Incident

On Wednesday morning, at approximately 7:30 am, the driver collected benzene—an easily ignitable substance used in the printing industry—from the company premises and set the minibus ablaze in front of the Dassault campus at Hinjewadi IT Park. While Hambardikar managed to escape the inferno, the four staff members seated in the middle and rear of the vehicle were not so fortunate, succumbing to the flames.

Legal Consequences and Investigation

Hambardikar, who sustained burns himself, is currently receiving treatment at Ruby Hall Clinic. Authorities have confirmed that they will arrest him once he is discharged. Additional charges of murder and attempted murder have been filed against him as investigations revealed that the fire was not caused by a short circuit, as initially believed, but was indeed an act of sabotage.
